Chairperson biography: Louis Ng

Louis is the Founder and Executive Director of ACRES, a Singaporean charity with a main aim of fostering compassion and respect for animals.

He received his Bachelor of Science in biology from the National University of Singapore and his Masters of Science in Primate Conservation from the Oxford Brookes University.

ACRES has worked on ZooCheck issues since 2001 and has inspected zoos throughout Asia, including in China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mala ysia, Singapore and Thailand.

ACRES has successfully campaigned to end circus-style animal shows and cheetah petting sessions and for the phasing out of the keeping of polar bears at Singapore Zoo.

Our efforts have led to vast improvements in the welfare of animals in captivity in Asia . The 2008 investigation into the welfare of animals in Zoo Negara, Malaysia , and subsequent meeting with the zoo led to significant improvements in the welfare of their elephants, bears, big cats and primates.

In 2007, Louis was presented with The Outstanding Young Persons of Singapore award. In 2002, Louis received the HSBC ( Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited) / NYAA (National Youth Achievement Award) Youth Environmental Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution in the field of environmental protection and nature conservation in Singapore.
